Moxibustion

What is moxibustion or moxa therapy?

Moxibustion is a heat therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that is often used in combination with acupuncture. It involves burning dried mugwort (moxa), the heat radiation from which penetrates deep into the tissue via the acupuncture points. This deep heat promotes blood circulation and strengthens the body's self-healing powers.

Important: Moxa therapy must not be used in cases of acute fever, severe inflammation or certain skin conditions, as additional heat could exacerbate the symptoms. Moxibustion can help to correct the position of the fetus if used in good time. However, it is not suitable for all pregnant women.

Moxibustion is often used for complaints that are associated with «cold» or a «lack of vital energy (Qi)» in TCM:

Pain: osteoarthritis, rheumatism or back problems that worsen in cold, wet weather

Exhaustion and a weak immune system: for burnout symptoms, chronic fatigue and high susceptibility to infections to strengthen the immune system

Digestive and abdominal issues: for chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual pain or unfulfilled desire to have children.

A single moxibustion treatment at TCM Seerose costs about 50 francs. The exact price depends on the duration of the treatment. Since I often combine moxibustion with acupuncture or cupping, the entire treatment usually costs between 120 and 156 francs.

I am recognized by the ErfahrungsMedizinisches Register (EMR). Most supplemental insurance policies for complementary medicine therefore cover part of the treatment costs. Please check with your supplemental insurance provider.

Moxibustion is very safe when used correctly and is perceived as beneficial. The most common side effect is a slight reddening of the skin due to the heat. In rare cases, the strong smell of burning mugwort can temporarily irritate the respiratory tract in sensitive people or asthmatics.
